Website: My Passport Ultra Metal Edition
The drive I received from WD has a brushed metal finish (it is actually aluminium) at the top with black plastic at the bottom.
The design is sleek and takes substantially less space compare to the other two 1 TB drives I have. (to be fair they are old and need an external power supply)
I would have liked the LED to be less bright (annoying in the night as my machine in my bedroom) but its not a deal breaker.
It comes with the usual WD SmartWare software’s like Pro backup software and WD Drive Utilities.
The user interface is simple and intuitive. You don’t need to be an advanced user to use this software. It allows you to schedule backups for folders as well as files. I regularly use to to back up my photos to another external drive
The best feature I think is the auto sync with DropBox.
Ease of Use
It works out of the box. Period. It is pre-formatted so just plug in and get going.
Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS
Same story here. The drive works without a problem.
for Mac the product packing clearly mentions the need to reformat the drive.
Being USB 3.0 you cannot use your standard USB cable laying around your house. The cable that comes along with the drive is a little too short.
A longer cable would have been good as I like to stack all my drives in a corner. Also, my machine has a USB 3.0 port right next to the fan. As the cable is short, it heats up the drive with the exhaust. I don’t know how it will affect the longevity of the drive.
Being USB 3.0 the R/W speed is quiet good. I got around 68 MB/s while copying photos. What I like the most is that now my Linghtroom works smoothly without freezing (while it writes to the drive).
Why should you buy it?
- Plenty of storage on the go
- Good performance
- Useful included software (depends on the user)
- Looks cool 😉
Why should you not buy it?
If you want to use it as a warp drive to power your car across the galaxy
